Tell New York to Support Religious Liberty!
The purpose of the New York State Division of Human Rights is to protect the rights all individuals-- this includes protecting business owners who act based off their religious convictions. They should not be supporting false claims of discrimination.
Does this sound like discrimination? [Quote from the Giffords]
“I think it's our right to choose who we market to, like any business… We are a family business and we just feel we ought to stay down the family path.”
On August 8, 2014, the New York State Division of Human Rights fined Cynthia and Robert Gifford, owners of Liberty Ridge Farms, $13,000 for acting on their belief that marriage is the union between a man and woman.
In 2012, when a same-sex couple approached the Giffords seeking to rent out their family’s barn for their wedding -- the Giffords declined in good conscience, as they felt hosting the wedding would violate their religious beliefs.
The attorney representing the Giffords said, "This is their home...and they are being compelled to host a ceremony they feel violates their religious beliefs in their home. (This is) something they don't feel New York or any state should force upon an individual or a business."
$10,000 of the fine will be paid out to the State of New York, and the remaining $3,000 will be paid out to the same-sex couple. Additionally, the state requires the Giffords to take a class on discrimination.
