Don't legalize abortion in Dominican Republic!
On Tuesday, December 16, the lower house of the Dominican Republic voted to decriminalize abortion for cases of the mother's health (broadly interpreted), rape, and fetal malformations. President Danilo Medina is encouraging the Senate to pass this bill, which would bring abortion to the island country. The vote followed an angry debate and a postponement dictated by the President of the Assembly, Abel Martinez.
The cardinal and Archbishop, Nicolás de Jesús López Rodríguez, expressed his open opposition to the pro-abortion bill, saying that:
"We (the Church) are defending human rights; the first human right is life for the unborn."
In addition, the Dominican bishops recalled that the pro-personhood Constitution that entered into force in January 2010. The constitution clearly establishes the right to life for all without exceptions, from conception to natural death:
"The right to life is inviolable from conception until death. The death penalty cannot be established, pronounced, nor applied, in any case."
This new controversy follows the November proposal of a new Penal Code, which would have increased the penalties for abortion. President Medina vetoed the pro-life law and proposed decriminalization instead!
We cannot allow abortion to be exported to the Dominican Republic! They are one of the few countries in the world that respect human life at all stages of development. This is VERY URGENT. The pro-abortion lobby is exerting heavy pressure to pass this bill. If we can collect enough signatures, perhaps we can change President Medina's mind and show that the world does NOT want Dominican Republic to legalize abortion!
Political organizations such as the Social Christian Reformist Party (PRSC) have asked the President to withdraw the bill legalizing abortion in some cases in order to ensure peace and tranquility of the Dominican people this Christmas.
