Solidarity with our Coptic brothers
Brutal. Inhumane. Surreal. This is the last video released by ISIS, showing the beheading of 21 Egyptian Copts captured in Syria. The executions take place in Tripoli, the capital of Libya. The Coptic Orthodox Church has described these murders as an "abominable crime," Islamic terrorism as "barbarism," and the UN's response as "appalling."
ISIS addressed their latest propaganda video to "the people of the cross, the followers of the hostile Egyptian Church." They ominously warn Christians, "safety for you, Crusaders, is something you can only wish for." One of the militantssays the group now plans to “conquer Rome” next and wave the black flag of jihad over St. Peter's Square. The video's last image shows the blood of the beheaded reaching the sea and spreading throughout the world.
Although President Obama refused to acknowledge that the victims were Christians or that the perpetrators were Islamic terrorists, Pope Francis responded by telling the world: “These brothers and sisters were killed only because they confessed Christ. It makes no difference whether they be Catholics, Orthodox, Copts or Lutherans. They are Christians. Their blood is one and the same. Their blood confesses Christ.”
“The blood of our Christian brothers and sisters is a blood that cries out to the Lord," Pope Francis added. In addition, he lambasted the "entrepreneurs of death" that continue to sell weapons in places of war.
These images are stunning. The last words of these martyrs were "Jesus, help me!" May God welcome them into his bosom, and offer peace to their families.
The Coptic church in America has stated the following: "We fast and pray for the 21 young people, their families and for all Egyptian citizens, for all the victims of evil and barbarity and peace. We ask our Lord to protect His people. And as the Lord Jesus Christ taught us, also pray for those who have perpetrated evil."
