Malawi Rejects Abortion!

On February 26, Malawi's Parliamentary Committee on Health took a stand for the personhood of all human beings and rejected calls to legalize abortion. Let's thank Malawi for protecting the most helpless and defenseless of all!

Deputy Parliamentary Speaker Esther Mcheka Chilenje said:

"We know that Malawi is a God-fearing nation, so there is need to consult religious leaders and many other stakeholders before we start to consider reviewing the laws on abortion."

She also cast doubt on the idea that legalizing abortion would reduce the number of maternal deaths, noting that one major cause right now is "long distances to the hospitals."

Recent peer-reviewed research shows that countries with less permissive abortion laws actually have better maternal health.

Because calls for “safe abortion” do nothing to help women who want to bring their children safely into the world, Malawi should focus its energy on dealing with the preventable causes of maternal mortality stemming from poverty, lack of education and lack of access to critical health-care infrastructure to provide adequate prenatal, perinatal and postnatal care.

Malawi, like most African countries, is under heavy pressure from the United States, European Union, and other Western nations. It is incredibly important for us to encourage Malawi for reaffirming their laws protecting the right to life!

Thank you for rejecting abortion!

Dear Deputy Speaker Chilenje,

I am writing you to thank you for your government's recent rejection of abortion in the parliamentary committee on health. We both know that the primary duty of government is to protect the right to life for all human beings, which includes unborn children.

Recent peer-reviewed research shows that countries with less permissive abortion laws actually have better maternal health.

Because calls for “safe abortion” do nothing to help women who want to bring their children safely into the world, I encourage you to focus energy on the preventable causes of maternal mortality stemming from poverty, lack of education and lack of access to critical health-care infrastructure to provide adequate prenatal, perinatal and postnatal care.

Sincerely,
