Las Vegas High School Pro-Life Club Discriminated Against
Like many involved students, high school sophomore Angelique Clark wanted to start a club on a topic she was passionate about. But her club application was denied. Why? Because it was a pro-life club.
Angelique didn’t anticipate the controversy that her application would bring when she filled out a request to start a Students for Life pro-life club in December 2014. It took months of asking for her to finally get a response from the administrators at her high school, West Career and Technical Academy in Las Vegas. When school administrators finally responded, they claimed that her club was too “controversial” for the school to allow.
Anqelique explains, “I am not asking the administration to agree with my pro-life position . . . I am simply asking the school to give pro-life students at West Career and Technical Academy the opportunity to make our voices heard. We want to discuss our view on an important topic – why choosing life is important. This may be a controversial issue, but that doesn’t mean we should lose our right to free speech.”
Anqelique reached out to Students for Life of America and the Thomas More Society for legal help to change the school’s decision. Jocelyn Floyd, Associate Counsel of Thomas More Society explained, “Denying students their right to form a pro-life club on the grounds that it’s ‘too controversial’ and ‘not inclusive’ is an affront to the First Amendment.”
Public pressure on the school to treat Angelique equally may aid in encouraging them to change their position on this issue. Sign this petition to tell the administrators at West Career and Technical Academy that you disagree with their decision to discriminate against Angelique Clark based on her pro-life views.
Pro-life students deserve to have the same rights as any other students to share their views and to start clubs about something they are passionate about.
