This simple statement should be something that everyone can agree on, but Texas Sheriff Ron Hickman has become a subject of criticism for declaring that “lives matter” in a press conference earlier this week.
One of Sheriff Hickman’s deputy sheriffs, Darren Goforth, was gunned down execution style by a criminal who bought into extremist rhetoric about law enforcement and racism.
In response to the shooting, Sheriff Hickman said at a press conference, “This rhetoric has gotten out of control. We’ve heard ‘black lives matter,’ ‘all lives matter,’ well cops’ lives matter too.” Hickman, visibly emotional, continued, “Why don’t we just drop the qualifier and say ‘lives matter.’”
Hickman’s declaration that “lives matter” has been deemed “controversial” and “insensitive” by certain groups, including national media groups like CNN. These claims are not true.
Sheriff Hickman simply recognizes that inflammatory rhetoric will get us nowhere in protecting the lives of anybody—black, white, young or old.
We must stand with Sheriff Hickman in defending his statement against these ridiculous attacks from the media and extremist groups who are inciting a race war in America through their inflammatory rhetoric (whether intended or not).
