Saudi Arabia: Karl Andree has served his time. Release him now!
In the midst of news around the UK's withdrawl from a deal to transfer prison expertise to Saudi Arabia, the case of Karl Andree has emerged.
Mr Andree, a UK national, who is a 74-year-old pensioner and who has been living in the Middle East for the past 25 years, was convicted of the possession of alcohol in 2014, when authorities found bottles of homemade wine in his car.
In Saudi Arabia, the possession of alcohol faces stiff penalties, as the legal code there is based on a strict interpretation of Islamic law, viewed through a Wahhabi lens. For his violation of the law, he received a sentence of 12 months in prison and more than 360 lashes.
Because of his frail health - attested to by his son Simon, who, speaking on BBC4 radio, said that his father Karl had survived 3 types of cancer, but still suffered from severe asthma - Mr Andree has, so far, been spared the lash. And, thankfully, Saudi officials have also privately confided that clemency would be shown in this regard.
However, the fact remains that Mr Andree has now served his full sentence. In fact, he has served 2 more months, in a Saudi prison, than his sentence mandates.
This petition, therefore, politely asks for justice to be shown to Mr Andree and his family - and, that he be released with immediate effect. King Salman is the main addressee of this petition, as he has the authority and influence to commute Mr Andree's sentence to time served. But, we are also petitioning the UK Foreign Office, the US Department of State, and the the EU International Affairs Chief, to ensure that Mr Andree's situation is presented as a justice and human rights issue, and not simply a political issue between the UK and Saudi Arabia.
Thank you for signing and sharing this urgent petition.
