URGENT: Assisted suicide legislation under consideration in Colorado

The so-called “Colorado End-Of-Life Options Act” has been resuscitated. We must act quickly to voice our opposition to this dangerous and life-threatening bill!

A similar bill was (thankfully!) defeated in committee last year, but the pro-assisted-suicide camp will not be easily dissuaded from their crusade. They’ve introduced a new bill in the House, and a companion bill in the Senate (Senate Bill 25). House Bill 16-1054 “authorizes an individual with a terminal illness to request, and the individual's attending physician to prescribe to the individual, medication to hasten the individual's death.”

These bills will be discussed in both the House and the Senate during the first week of February. It is absolutely vital that we speak out now, unified in opposition to this bill.

Assisted suicide threatens the most vulnerable among us, those suffering from long-term illnesses who cannot defend themselves against pressure to end their lives.

This bill would put the safety of patients -- especially the elderly and the infirm -- at risk.

Doctors have a duty to care for their patients, but this bill would flip that relationship on its head. Instead of caring for their patients, doctors would be allowed (and in some cases even encouraged) to end the lives of their patients. In the future, doctors may even be obligated to provide these services, once they are understood as a “right” that patients deserve.

We've seen in Oregon that patients have been able to obtain lethal prescription doses of poison even if they have a history of depression, suicidality, or paranoia! How many people will choose assisted suicide in a state of depression, without psychological support or help? How many elderly people in abusive situations will be pressured to make decisions that are contrary to their wellbeing?

It is absolutely essential that we do NOT allow this bill to become the law in Colorado.

Sign this petition to send a letter directly to the House Judiciary Committee (who will be hearing this bill on February 4th)  and the Senate State Veterans & Military Affairs Committee (who will be hearing this bill on February 3rd).

Remind these committees that their constituents STILL oppose legalizing assisted suicide in Colorado.

Vote against the so-called "Colorado End-of-Life Options Act"

Dear House Judiciary Committee and Senate State Veterans & Military Affairs Committee,

I urge you to vote against the so-called “Colorado End-of-Life Options Act.”

Assisted suicide puts the most vulnerable among us -- the elderly and the infirm -- at risk of abuse and manipulation.

We've seen in Oregon that patients have been able to obtain lethal prescription doses of poison even if they have a history of depression, suicidality, or paranoia. How many people will choose assisted suicide in a state of depression, without psychological support or help? How many elderly people in abusive situations will be pressured to make decisions that are contrary to their wellbeing?

It is absolutely essential that you do not allow this bill to become the law in Colorado.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]
