Alberta: Stop Assisted Suicide!
Three MLAs are gathering input from Albertans on new guidelines for assisted suicide, which the Supreme Court imposed on Canada in February 2015. The troika must promulgate their recommendations for legislation by June 6.
Please encourage the decision-makers to reject assisted suicide in Alberta, using the "notwithstanding clause" in Section 33 of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and the protection of the right to life contained in Section 7.
Laws prohibiting assisted suicide protect people with disabilities, the elderly, and other people. They also help ensure that a doctor’s oath – to do no harm – could be upheld. Permitting assisted suicide strips the "duty of care" which doctors owe to their patients of all meaning.
This is extremely urgent! One Calgary woman was killed by physicians two weeks ago, simply because she faced serious illness!
One bioethicist at McGill University, Margaret Somerville, says that assisted suicide “legaliz[es] the intentional infliction of death on our most vulnerable citizens — those who are old, frail, disabled, depressed, mentally, physically, or terminally ill…”
Alberta should be known for its welcoming hospitality, friendly people, and beautiful landscape, not for assisted suicide.
