Thanks for Supporting Human Dignity Hon. Minister Sussan Ley

This week the federal Minister for Health the Hon. Sussan Ley publicly stated her opposition to euthanasia. She also called for improved palliative care services for people at the end of their lives. These statements highlight the importance of protecting human dignity at all stages and that every life counts.

Please sign our petition to send a thank you message of support to the Health Minister in appreciation for taking a strong public stance against euthanasia.

HOPE, a coalition of groups preventing euthanasia and assisted Suicide today welcomed the Minister's comments stating that: “it is commendable that the Federal Minister for Health has taken a strong position to protect the rights of vulnerable individuals at the end of their lives. Further moves to ensure increased supports and access to palliative care services for all Australians are also welcome.”

Euthanasia or assisted Suicide is not the answer to death with dignity. We only need to look at other jurisdictions such as Belgium or Netherlands where Euthanasia has been legalised to see the results of legalisation- unworkable safeguards, death without consent and falsifying of statistics.  Protecting the most vulnerable in our society such as older persons, people with disabilities and those who have no one to advocate for them is a key task of our legislators. Our politicians and leaders must support measures that will make Euthanasia and Assisted suicide unthinkable.

Improving access to adequate palliative care and hospice services is one proactive way in which we can do this. The World Health Organisation states that “Palliative care is an approach that improves the quality of life of patients and their families facing the problem associated with life-threatening illness, through the prevention and relief of suffering by means of early identification and impeccable assessment and treatment of pain and other problems, physical, psychosocial and spiritual.”

More politicians like Minister Ley must stand against moves to introduce soft measures to open the door to Euthanasia and Assisted suicide and support greater initiatives for excellence in palliative care services.

Thank you for your opposition to euthanaisa Minister Ley

Dear Minister Ley,

I would like to thank you for your recent public comments to oppose euthanasia.

Your leadership on this issue to protect the dignity of vulnerable Australians such as the elderly, terminally ill and those living with disabilities is commendable.

I hope that more politicians will follow your example to oppose euthanasia and assisted suicide and help make Australia a centre of excellence in the provision of palliative care services.

Sincerely,
