Protect life in Trinidad & Tobago: Zika is no excuse for abortion
Latest Update (April 8): Health Minister Deyalsingh issued a strong statement in defense of Trinidad and Tobago's pro-life laws. He told reporters:
“That [pro-life position] is the law of Trinidad and Tobago and that is the law I swore to uphold…Further, one could look at the Code of Ethics of the Medical Board of Trinidad and Tobago, which tells doctors: you must not perform abortions unless the physical and mental well-being of the mother is at risk.”
“Those are the guidelines, those are the laws, those are the ethical guidelines which I as Minister of Health and a member of the Cabinet, and a member of government will be upholding.”
“We feel that at this point in time, the existing laws reflect accurately the majority view of Trinidad and Tobago, notwithstanding anyone’s personal view or other associations which may have a different view. We feel that these laws are adequate to deal with the issue of abortion and reflect the vast majority view including and inclusive of the silent majority who will not speak on the issue.”
The petition text has been updated to THANK the Minister for his response that he will continue to protect life!
Their strategy is clear... Radical pro-abortion groups are using the Zika virus to promote legalization of abortion-on-demand in Trinidad and Tobago.
While the Zika virus should certainly be taken seriously as a threat to pregnant women and their unborn babies, it should NOT be used as an excuse to extend pro-abortion laws.
We cannot allow the pro-abortion lobby to use this virus as another excuse to legalize abortion and take away the lives of innocent, precious babies.
The Family Planning Association, which is backed by powerful interests in the United States and associated with Planned Parenthood, released a press statement this week, saying that “There is no (more) pressing time than now for the Government of Trinidad and Tobago to revisit its position on abortion to ensure access to safe abortion services for women who have Zika infection and might wish to have an abortion because of fear of microcephaly. There is need for an urgent response at the service provision, research, and policy levels.”
Of course, there is no such thing as a “safe abortion.” Abortion always hurts women and kills babies. The FPA is just shamelessly taking advantage of fear of the Zika virus to argue for eugenic killing of babies simply because they might have a birth defect.
This is immoral utilitarianism at its worst. The disabled and most vulnerable members of our societies deserve our protection and support, NOT the death sentence!
The solution to this tragic problem is prevention, research, and medical assistance, NOT abortion... not the purposeful taking of life!
Sign this petition to send a email to Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley and Health Minister Mr. Terrence Deyalsingh, to tell them to reject abortion as a “solution” to Zika and to reaffirm their offices' commitment to protecting human life. After all, the Ministry of Health is meant to ensure the HEALTH of all members of society, not the eradication of the weakest among us.
The Ministry of Health should make a clear public statement that the presence of the Zika virus in no way indicates the need for more open abortion laws in Trinidad and Tobago.

Thank you for protecting life in Trinidad and Tobago!
