Support SB118 Abortion Informed Consent in the Utah Legislature
Last Friday, the Utah State Senate voted 26-1 to send Senate Bill 118 (SB 118) - Abortion Law Amendments (Informed Consent) - to its third reading. This is the last step needed before the Bill is sent to the State House, where it would go through a similar process.
So, although the Bill still has hurdles to overcome, it has a great start in the Legislature.
And, the Bill, which would amend Utah's existing Abortion Law and strengthen its Informed Consent provisions, is sorely needed.
At the moment, abortion-seeking women receive information about what an abortion is/does, the development of the unborn child, etc., but, that state-mandated information is given to them by the abortion provider.
The new Bill, on the other hand, will take that responsibility away from the abortion provider and will give it to the state.
The information will still be given to the women at the abortion clinic and they will still have to wait 72 hours from the time of initially scheduling the abortion to the time when the abortion is carried out, but, if this Bill passes the Legislature, the information will be given to them via a state-run website in an interactive session (which will confirm their participation in/viewing of the same).
And, crucially, it will also ensure that women get accurate, unbiased information about this life-and-death decision.
In short, this Bill seeks to safeguard the lives and health (physical, mental, and otherwise) of women, and, also, to do more to make abortion unthinkable.
Even one abortion is too many - a personal tragedy and a violent end to the life of an innocent human being. Therefore, we look forward to the day when abortion cannot even be contemplated.
But, for the moment, this petition encourages the Utah State Senate to pass SB 118, thereby sending it to the House, where we also encourage its passage.
Thank you for signing this URGENT petition.
