Save Canada's Office of Religious Freedom
The Liberal government is going to shutter the Office of Religious Freedom unless we take immediate action!
Almost 77% of the world's population lives in countries with "high government restrictions" on freedom of religion or where there is significant "social hostility" to such liberty. And crackdowns on religious liberty are increasing globally.
Recent events show how important it is that Canada prioritizes freedom of religion in its domestic and foreign policy... On Easter Sunday, a suicide bomber attacked Pakistani Christians as they picnicked in the park. Yazidis, Christians, and other religious minorities are being exterminated by ISIS in Iraq and Syria. Tibetan Buddhists, Sunni Muslim Uighurs in China, and Iranian Baha'is all experience persecution in their countries as well.
The Office of Religious Freedom has been a bastion against persecution and discrimination based on religious belief.
After its creation in 2013, the Office funded several overseas initiatives to promote religious tolerance and education. As just one example, the Office gave a $226,630 grant to the Canadian office of the Catholic Near East Welfare Association, leading to a successful project in Ukraine which promoted religious freedom and ecumenicalism between eastern and western Ukrainian youth.
The Office's mandate expires on March 31, 2016, and the Parliament just rejected a motion to extend the mandate by a vote of 226-90. Unless we act now, the Office may be closed by the end of the week!
