Virginia Mom Fights Sexually Explicit Books in Public Schools!

Laura Murphy, a mother of four from Fairfax, Virginia, is taking the fight against over-the-top, sexually explicit literature in public schools to the Virginia General Assembly. Please stand with Murphy and tell the legislature to pass this legislation to protect our children!

House Bill 516 would require public schools to notify parents of sexually explicit material in the classroom; allow parents to review that content; and, upon request, grant them the ability to opt out.

Murphy’s fight against sexually explicit material in the public schools all started four years ago when she became aware of what her teenage sons were being required to read.

Her son, who was a sophomore at the time brought the material to her attention and said that he couldn’t read it anymore.

“My jaw hit the ground,” Murphy said. Since then Murphy has been advocating for public school teachers to better inform parents of reading materials that contain sexually explicit content. She’s also advocating for the right to “opt out” of such content.

Some of the books assigned to her children referenced sensitive topics such as “bestiality,” “sex,” and “rape.”

In fact, the content was so inappropriate that when Murphy tried to email verbatim quotations to Virginia Board of Education, the government’s firewall blocked her email from being delivered because the content of the email—the direct quotation from her sons required reading—was considered obscene and potentially harmful to children.

On Monday morning, the bill passed the Education Committee 22-0, with the full support of both Democrats and Republicans.

Now it is time to pressure House leaders to advocate for HB 516 on the house floor so that it can become law in the state of Virginia. Please stand with Murphy and all Virginia parents in protecting our children. Ask the Virginia General Assembly to take a stand against required sexually explicit readings in our schools!

Please pass House Bill 516

To the Virginia General Assembly,

I am writing to express my strong support for House Bill 516 which would require public schools to notify parents of sexually explicit material in the classroom; allow parents to review that content; and, upon request, grant them the ability to opt out.

In order to protect our children and provide greater transparency among teachers and parents, please make this legislation law.

I believe that requiring students to read sexually explicit material is harmful and that parents should be able to decide what content their children are exposed to.

Sincerely,
